Thomas D. Jones & Novella R. Morris


Thomas D. Jones and Novella R. Morris were married December 8, 1917 at the home of her parents in Moscow, KY. Thomas Drew Jones was born August 15, 1889 at the family home in Hickman County. He was the son of William Edgar Jones and Ivey Drew Jones. After attending Clinton High School he started farming on land in southwestern Hickman County he had inherited from his grandfather. In 1927 he moved to Clinton,KY and opened an automobile dealership in partnership with Black Bussey. Due to the "Great Depression" of 1929 this undertaking proved to be a failure. He was appointed Clinton Postmaster in 1930 and served until 1935. During World War II he moved to Joliet, IL where he worked in a munitions plant as a foreman. After returning to Clinton in 1945 he established Jones Used Cars and operated it until his death in 1971.

Novella Rowena Morris was born July 3, 1898, the daughter of C.B. Morris and Jennie Mangrum Morris. She grew up in the Moscow community and attended grade school there. She then went to Ruskin College near Dickson, TN where she graduated. After moving to Clinton from the farm where she and her husband lived the first ten years of their married life, and where both of their children were born..She had a varied career of employment outside the home. She was a clerk in the Clinton Post Office while her husband was Postmaster. She worked for ten years at the ticket window of the old Strand Theater. For 18 years she was Society Editor and bookkeeper of the Hickman County Gazette. While living in Joliet she was employed at a large department store. After returning to Clinton she had several other jobs, working almost until her death on November 9, 1979.

Tom and Novella had two daughters. Dorothy Morris was born September 2, 1918 (see Williams-Jones for bio.). Margaret Ann was born October 14, 1922. She married Harrison I. Brown of Cairo, IL and they had four children-Mary Vivian, Suzanne, Alfred Thomas and John Martin. She died March 20, 1950. Her daughter Mary Vivian preceded her in death.
