W. E. (Polly) Williams & Dorothy M. Jones

William Edward Williams was born in Clinton, KY on May 22, 1908, the son of W. B. and Agnes Williams. When he was about eight years old he was given the nickname "Polly" and most of Hickman County knew him by that name. In fact, he finally had to have that listing in the telephone book for so many who were actual friends did not know his "real" name. He attended a private grade school at Marvin College and Clinton High School. He then attended music schools in St. Louis, MO, Nashville, TN, and the Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, OH. He played piano, trumpet, trombone and guitar, but his favorite was banjo. He traveled several years playing in dance bands, mostly in Texas, Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee. After his father's death in 1929, he returned to Clinton to help his brother J.E. operate Williams Hardware.

In the early 1930's he also had his own dance band "Polly Williams & His Orchestra". They would play "one-night-stands" in the surrounding area so he could work in the store during the day. He and his brother continued to run the store until J.E.'s death in 1981, then it was sold in 1982. Polly passed away on June 17, 2000 and was buried in the Clinton Cemetery.

Dorothy Morris Jones was born September 2, 1918, daughter of Thomas D. and Novella M. Jones. She started to school in the small one-room Deweese School, then attended Clinton Elementary School and graduated from Clinton High School in 1935. Soon after graduation she was employed as office girl by Dr. Blanton Russell and also sold tickets at the Strand Theater. In August of 1938 she began work at the Clinton Bank. She stopped work in early 1940 and returned to the bank in 1953, working there about thirty years before retiring in 1980. Dorothy and Ed were married on September 5, 1938 and spent their honeymoon in St. Louis, MO.

Ed and Dorothy were active members of First Christian Church of Clinton. She played the organ for the church for over 20 years and he sang in the choir. After moving to Florida in 1982 they became active members of Central Christian Church of Orlando. They had two children. Their daughter Margaret Ann (Peggy) was born August 23, 1940. She graduated from Clinton High School and attended Baptist Memorial School of Nursing in Memphis,TN. She married John E. Spears in 1959 and they had three children, Julie Anne Spears (Austin), Amy Elizabeth Spears, and Phillip Alan Dewilton. She later married David Brimm in 1978. Peggy died in Orlando, FL in 1990. See a family photo taken around 1968.

Their son William Banks was born February 27, 1944. He graduated from Hickman County High School in 1962 and from the University of Kentucky in 1967 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. He moved to Melbourne, Australia, after retiring from N.A.S.A. at Kennedy Space Center where he was employed for over 33 years. He and his family moved back to Melbourne, FL in December of 2003. He is married to the former Sandra Sheilagh Johnstone, from Australia, and they have one son Jonathan David. Bill also has another son, William Douglas, now living in Cincinnati, OH and is married to the former Melissa Peterson.
